Every person on that call, every face, every voice, every gesture, was a deepfake. Not one of them was real. By the time the employee checked with head office, the money had vanished into a labyrinth of overseas accounts. No arrests have been made. No funds have been recovered.
That single incident would have been unthinkable three years ago. Today it is merely the most cinematic entry in a rapidly expanding ledger of AI-powered fraud that, according to Deloitte's Center for Financial Services, is on track to inflict $40 billion in losses in the United States alone by 2027. The FTC logged $12.5 billion in consumer fraud losses in 2024. The attacker needs you to act before you think. Any request for money that demands immediate action and discourages verification is, by definition, suspect. The more urgent it feels, the more important it is to slow down.
The age of trusting your eyes and ears is over. What replaces it is not paranoia but protocol: structured verification, institutional safeguards, and the understanding that in 2026, the most dangerous person in your inbox, on your screen, or on the other end of the phone may not be a person at all.
